Before retiring as an active minister, the Rev. Jeb Magruder told his Kentucky congregation a few things about perseverance.

"Many of us remember countless times when we could have given up. But I didn't, and each of you also hasn't given up," the former Watergate conspirator told about 300 people at the First Presbyterian Church. "What this tells us, as weak as we are, (is that) the strength beyond our strength has pulled us through at least this far."Magruder, an aide to President Richard Nixon, left the Lexington congregation he has led since 1990 to become a financial consultant for churches in Dallas.
