Just after he was convicted of kidnapping and sexual battery, a man pulled out a 9-inch plastic knife in the courtroom and attacked two deputies before a third officer shot him to death.
James Eugene Moore, 51, "went crazy" as deputies moved to take him into custody Monday, juror Kim Ball said."You've just given me a death sentence for something that I didn't do," Moore shouted, according to Ball.
Jerrianne Hayslett, spokeswoman for Los Angeles Superior Court, said Moore got the knife past metal detectors because it was plastic. The knife was inscribed with the words "For Christina Fleming," apparently referring to prosecutor Christian Fleming-Jackson, who handled Moore's case. She was not in the courtroom at the time.
One deputy was stabbed under her arm and suffered a collapsed lung. She was in stable condition Monday. Another deputy was treated for neck abrasions and released.
