Suspected rival gang members exchanged gunfire Thursday night, sending one unidentified man to Columbia St. Mark's Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.

The man, whose name was still unavailable Friday, was treated and later released. The shooting started at 10:25 p.m. in the Atherton Park Apartments, 4545 S. Atherton Drive (1075 West), when a group of gang members with an apparent gripe went to Apartment 66 and fired about 20 shots, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Potter said.

Investigators recovered spent shells from a .32-caliber, semiautomatic weapon at the scene.

Police suspect the leader of the group was an unidentified man who lives in Apartment 44 of the complex and is the father of a 13-year-old girl who had visited Apartment 66 earlier in the evening, Potter said. Police responded to a disturbance call at the apartment earlier that night but found nothing.

Within an hour of the shooting, members of the second gang retaliated against the first gang by going to Apartment 44 and returning fire, Potter said.

No one was injured. Police are still unsure how many shots were fired at the second apartment.

The incidents are still under investigation, and detectives are sorting out the details of the shootings, Potter said.
