A 19-year-old Helper man was killed on Memorial Day while rappelling in Carbon County.

Killed was:Joseph M. Tweed, 19. Helper.

Tweed was rappelling in Spring Canyon, which is northwest of Helper, when he fell about 100 feet, said Carbon County Sheriff Jim Robertson. After Tweed fell, other people in the area ran to a phone, about 10 minutes away, and called deputies, he said.

Rescue workers got the call for help about 1:30 p.m. Tweed was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Robertson said.

Investigators believe Tweed's equipment failed, causing the fall, he said.

Spring Canyon is a popular site for rappelling, in which a climber is bound by a rope and harness to maneuver down the face of a rocky hill or mountainside.
