Violet McCormick Gates, age 91, passes away May 27, 1998 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She was born May 28, 1906 in Salt Lake City to John Morrison McCormick and Helen Fullerton. She married Eliot Young Gates of Salt Lake City on December 31, 1928, in Rockville, Maryland.Violet graduated from LDS High School in Salt Lake City and attended the University of Utah. She was a member of the Delta Epsilon Sororoity, which later became Delta Delta Delta. She was active in the Girl Scouts and was the Administrative Director of Camp Cloud Rim for many years. she was also a long time member of the Garden Club. She worked for the State Board of Education for many years and later worked for the Department of Employment Security. While her children were younger, she enjoyed teaching Primary and Young Women's classes.
She was a wonderful cook and homemaker. Violet enjoyed knitting, needlepoint and roses. She enjoyed her family and most of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered as a person who enjoyed meeting and talking with people. She was a kind and gentle woman.
She is survived by a daughter, Stephany G. Howell (Neil); a son, John E. Gates (Christena); boty of Salt Lake City; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald A. F. McCormick (Afton), of Kaysville. Preceded in death by her husband, Eliot Y. Gates; and eight brothers and sister.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 29, 1998 at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, "N" Street at 5th Avenue. Funeral directors, Larkin Mortuary.
