The Michael Bolton Foundation plans to give $300,000 to a program for teenagers in the pop singer's hometown of Hartford, Conn.

The foundation, a charity for women and children, has been crit-i-cized for spending too little money on the needy. Bolton said last month he would try to make sure at least half of future money raised would go to charities.Over the next 15 months, the organization will disburse money from the grant to Safe Space of New Haven Inc., said Jim Grossman, a foundation spokesman.

Bolton's pledge came after it was revealed that in 1995 less than 15 percent of the $2.6 million raised by the foundation made its way to charity.
