A Midvale man has been arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of automobile homicide after striking a jogger with his car Sunday and then fleeing the scene.

The runner, Leslie A. Stephens, 47, and her husband, Richard Stephens, were jogging northbound near 7400 South and 900 East at 7:45 a.m. Sunday when she was struck by a sport-utility vehicle, Midvale police detective Scott Hodgkinson said. The vehicle was traveling south, but it crossed three lanes of traffic and hit the woman. The vehicle then struck a large sign and stopped. The driver got out of the car and ran toward a nearby apartment complex, witnesses told police.

Leslie Stephens was transported by medical helicopter to University Hospital, where she later died.

The driver apparently ran to his father's apartment, police said. The father, whose name was not available, contacted police.

Robert Longaker, 26, was arrested Sunday shortly after the accident.
