RICHEST INDY PURSE: Eddie Cheever's victory in the 82nd Indianapolis 500 was worth $1,433,000 from the richest purse in auto racing history.

Cheever, who beat former Indy winner Buddy Lazier to the checkered flag by 3.19 seconds Sunday, was honored at the annual Victory Dinner.

The purse of $8,722,150 broke the record of $8,612,450 last year, when Arie Luyendyk took home a record $1,568,150 for his second victory at Indy. Cheever's winnings were almost as much as he earned in eight previous Indy starts combined.


VOLVO PGA CHAMPIONSHIP: Colin Montgomerie made a 10-foot birdie putt at the final hole for a 1-stroke victory in the Volvo PGA Championship at Virginia Water, England.

Horse racing

MAPLE RETIRES: Jockey Eddie Maple, who rode two Belmont Stakes winners, announced his retirement, ending a 33-year riding career.

College baseball

COLLEGE SERIES SEEDINGS: The NCAA baseball committee awarded Florida the No. 1 seed for the College World Series.

The Gators (46-16) got the nod over No. 2 Miami (50-10), No. 3 Florida State (53-18) and No. 4 Southern Cal (44-16).


PRINCETON TRIUMPHS: Princeton punctuated its claim as one of college lacrosse's great programs by beating Maryland 15-5 for its third straight NCAA Division I title and fifth in seven years.
