An employee at ICON Health & Fitness remained in critical condition Saturday after he was accidentally shot in the chest by a fellow employee on Friday.
Chad Smith, 26, told Logan police he was looking at his friend's new .40-caliber handgun when he, believing the safety was on, pulled the trigger. A bullet went through Smith's index finger, which was covering the barrel, and lodged in the chest of Patrick Bentley, 31.Bentley was airlifted to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City where he was in critical condition. Police said he suffered two cardiac arrests.
Logan police officer Scott Bodily said both men volunteer as emergency medical technicians for the company and when police arrived Smith was tending to Bentley's wound.
Police have since learned that Smith was on probation in Franklin County, Idaho, for felony evasion of a police officer.
He also had his own handgun and 192 rounds of ammunition at the time of the shooting, police said.
"No one's going to be getting their guns back, not after this situation," said Bodily.
The Cache County attorney's office could file charges. The severity of those charges will be affected by whether Bentley lives.
