A British mine clearance expert who disappeared in Cambodia in 1996 was murdered, the Foreign Office said Sunday.

Scotland Yard detectives sent last month to investigate the case of Christopher Howes have found "firm evidence" that the 37-year-old former soldier was killed after his capture by Khmer Rouge guerrillas, the Foreign Office said.The Foreign Office did not say when Howes died and has refused to say whether the witnesses who helped the British investigation were linked to the Khmer Rouge.
