Cineplex Odeon, the Toronto-based movie theater chain which operates 1,680 screens across North America and 43 in 14 locations in Utah, will hold a grand opening Friday of its latest local complex.

That is the Holladay Center Cinemas, a six-screen, 1,700-seat facility at 1945 E. 4800 South.A Cineplex Odeon spokesman said the complex reflects the company's philosophy of retaining the elegance of past movie palaces with marble floors, stepped ceilings and plush seating along with state-of-the-art technology such as Dolby sound systems, wide screens and 70 mm projection capability.

For the hearing impaired, special infrared listening systems have been installed in all six theaters which provides both hearing aid users and non-users with amplified sound.

A large, original painting, "Ishi's Dream," by Canadian artist Paul Sloggett, will be on permanent display in the lobby.
