A passenger helicopter ferrying five people from the Coca-Cola 600 crashed onto a four-lane highway early Sunday about 30 miles east of Charlotte, killing all aboard, the Union County sheriff said.

The two women and three men were tentatively identified, but their names were being withheld until their families could be notified, sheriff Frank McGuirt said.None were NASCAR drivers or team owners, he said.

The chopper, owned by a private helicopter rental company, had been at the Charlotte Motor Speedway about 30 miles away, based on items investigators found inside the aircraft, McGuirt said.

The Coca-Cola 600 ended about two hours before the 12:40 a.m. crash.
