For the week of May 24

Spraying apples

Apple growers along the Wasatch Front should spray for codling moths this week. If left untreated, codling moth larvae will likely destroy 90 percent of your crop.

The preferred product to fight the moths is Imidan. Apply it every 14-21 days from now through Labor Day. Diazinon can also be used. Apply it every seven to 14 days. Dipel or thuricide are organic controls and will work if applied every three to five days. The sprays must be consistent and must cover the fruit each time they are applied.

Fertilizing lawns

Lawns in our area need regular fertilization with nitrogen to flourish. One standard recommendation is to apply one pound of nitrogen three times per season. An easy way to remember the timing is to fertilize the lawn on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and again on Labor Day. This allows about six weeks between each application of fertilizer.

Fertilize enough to keep the lawn green but not so much that you stimulate excessive growth. It makes better sense to apply less fertilizer more often. An alternative is to apply one-half pound of nitrogen every growing month. This avoids the thick, lush growth that must be mowed twice per week after you fertilize. Apply this rate from April through October.

Slow-release fertilizers also reduce growth spikes. They release a small amount over a long period. Keep in mind that to get one pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet, apply five pounds of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0), three pounds of ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) or two pounds of urea (46-0-0).
