The head coach of the U.S. women's alpine ski team, Herwig Demschar, has been hired as director of alpine sports for the 2002 Winter Games by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee.
Demschar will be responsible for the Olympic competitions in alpine skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Some 20 events are scheduled at the Park City, Deer Valley and Snowbasin ski areas."My goal in my new position is to make the Salt Lake City Games a success for the athletes," Demschar said. "I want all of the alpine athletes to leave Salt Lake City feeling that it was a great athletic experience for them."
He'll start on June 1 and will report to the organizing committee's yet-to-be-named director of sports. SLOC is under pressure from the International Olympic Committee to fill key posts, especially those in sports, as soon as possible.
Demschar comes to the Olympics from the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association in Park City, where he served as head coach of the women's alpine ski team since 1994.
A native of Austria, Demschar was a member of that country's national ski team staff for nine years, including two years as head coach of the Austrian women's alpine team.
