Some 1,200 pounds of buffalo meat will be donated to three Salt Lake charities by the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation.

The meat is from three buffalo which died last fall during a roundup on Antelope Island, parks officials said. State parks had hoped to auction off the meat, but questions concerning proper inspection of the meat prompted the division to instead donate it to the Salvation Army, Rescue Mission and Jennie Dudley's transient kitchen.Meat inspectors were on the island last fall, but were not present when the animals were killed, as the law requires.

"The meat is state property and must benefit the state," said Jerry Miller, director of Parks and Recreation. "Since we can't sell it, we are giving it to the needy."
