Gold Cross, a local, privately operated ambulance company, has donated two pieces of life-saving medical equipment to the state of Utah in honor of national Emergency Medical Services Week.

On Wednesday, Gold Cross representatives presented Gov. Mike Leavitt with two portable defibrillators, which deliver an electrical shock to the heart and combat sudden cardiac arrest.Nearly 350,000 Americans died annually from sudden cardiac arrests, said Dale Zabrisiki, a spokesman for Gold Cross and Physio-Control International, a defibrillator manufacturer.

The equipment, which is valued at about $7,000, will become part of the governor's security staff equipment and will be housed at the state capitol for use in emergency medical situations.
