The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded the Weber County Sheriff's Office a $50,000 grant to cover costs incurred at the county jail from incarceration of undocumented criminal immigrants.
The grant was received May 20, Weber County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Leslie Townsend said.Between 25 and 30 undocumented immigrants are arrested monthly and housed in the Weber County Jail, Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Florie Peterson said. The length of incarceration ranges from one day to one month, she said. In the past, the cost was covered by tax dollars from Weber County residents.
