"60 Minutes" pundit Andy Rooney joined fellow veterans of the World War II military magazine Yank at a reunion in New York celebrating the GI journal.
Illustrator Howard Brody, photographer Slim Aarons and reporter David Richardson were among the group of about two dozen men, who now range in age from 70 to 92."We wrote from the misery perspective. We were the voice of the man in the mud," said Barrett McGurn, master of ceremonies at the reunion last week.
The weekly "written by and for GIs" was said to be free of censorship from military brass. It sold for 5 cents and had a circulation of about 2 million. It ran from May 1942 to December 1945.
Four Yank reporters died covering the war and eight received Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in battle.
