The Utah Building and Construction Trades Council is asking corporations, associations and educational and financial institutions to do business only with construction contractors who invest in apprenticeship training and maintain a skilled work force.

A letter to those groups from the council's business manager, Steve Richins, said the number of skilled construction workers has been decreasing nationwide due to a lack of adequate training programs."As Utah and the rest of the nation come to grips with the high cost of `cheap' construction at the hands of an unskilled work force, I would like to remind you, on behalf of the Utah Building Trades, that no one in Utah - outside of Utah's labor unions - has a continuous record of over a hundred years investment in worker apprenticeship and training programs," Richins' letter said.
