Viewers of UPN and I know there are a few of them out there - can be excused if they're a bit confused when the network debuts its new schedule this fall.

There will be more new shows (six) than old ones (five). And the network-wannabe is adding almost as many nights as it already has.Beginning this fall, UPN will program Thursday and Friday nights in addition to Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

UPN is attempting to widen its appeal by adding three sitcoms and three drama series, but there's a definite bent toward the unusual. Two of the shows - the comedy "The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer" and the drama "Legacy" - are set in the 19th century. The other two dramas are both science-fiction-oriented - one ("Mercy Point") is set in outer space, and the other ("Seven Days") involves time travel.

The aspiring network is also adding what it calls "The UPN Way Out There Movie" on Thurs-day nights. It will feature 21 made-for-TV flicks "that combine fantasy, science fiction and adventure." Kicking the franchise off will be a remake of the 1958 theatrical film "I Married a Monster."

UPN's new comedies:

Guys Like Us (Mondays at 7 p.m.) is a buddy comedy about two twentysomething guys who become a trio when the 6-year-old brother of one of the guys moves in with them. Bumper Robinson ("Three") and Chris Hardwick (MTV's "Singled Out") star.

DiResta (Mondays at 7:30 p.m.) is based on John DiResta's real life as a New York transit cop, including both his job and his home life.

The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer (Mondays at 8:30 p.m.) is set in the Abraham Lincoln White House where Desmond is both the chief butler and a key adviser to the 16th president. From the producers of the movie "Kingpin."

UPN's dramas are:

Mercy Point (Tuesdays at 8 p.m.) is a sci-fi medical drama, set in a state-of-the-art medical hospital in deep space where a team of "med-nauts" care for both humans and aliens.

Seven Days (Wednesdays at 7 p.m.) stars Jonathan LaPaglia ("New York Undercover") as a former CIA operative who is recruited to go back in time and thwart present-day catastrophes - like the assassination of the president and vice president - in the space of seven days.

Legacy (Fridays at 7 p.m.) is the saga of the Logan family, horse breeders and tobacco growers living in post-Civil War Kentucky.

Among the shows UPN axed are "In the House," "Good News," "Sparks," "Hitz," "Head Over Heels" and "The Sentinel."
