The top Marine at Fort Knox was dismissed in the aftermath of brutal hazings and beatings by members of his detachment during the past year.

Lt. Col. Jeff Wilkinson was removed from his post Wednesday after a new allegation involving a promotion ceremony earlier this month that was deemed inappropriate, said Lt. Col. Scott Campbell, a spokesman for the Pentagon.Wilkinson was head of the Marine detachment at the Army post when a tank-maintenance trainee was brutally beaten by fellow Marines on Dec. 17. Then-Pvt. Maciej Lugowski's spleen was ruptured in the attack and he nearly died.

Four fellow trainees were charged with assault, conspiracy and hazing in connection with the December assault. Nearly all have pleaded guilty and sentenced to punishments ranging from 30 months in the brig to a demotion of one rank.

Wilkinson was never directly implicated in any of the incidents.
