Mary Ellen Davis Gerth, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully at home on May 14, 1998.
She was born March 30, 1906 in Spanish Fork, Utah to Warren Edgar Davis and Barbara Elizabeth Mooney. She married her sweetheart, Carl Gerth, June 16, 1926 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were married over 71 years. They are the parents of 10 children, 48 grandchildren and 73 great-grandchildren. She loved children and spent her whole life caring for all of us. Mary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught Primary until she was 85 years old and was a Visiting Teacher until she was 90. Carl and Mary loved to see things grow and had a beautiful garden. She continued to bake bread until six months ago, "the best bread in the world."She is survived by her husband; children, Carl Edgar (Sharon); Catherine Elisabeth Bradshaw (Maurell) Gilmer, Texas; Clara Lena Gourley (Cal), Tempe, Arizona; Edna May Tuke (Jack); John Theodore (Janet); Carol Ruth Bench (Clyde); Barbara Ann Hugentobler (Jerry); Shirley Kay VanderWerff (Fred); Linda Joan Riley (Demar). She is preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Louise Olsen; grandsons, Billy Bradshaw and Walter Tuke; and a great-grandson Daniel Wanless.
The family would like to thank Dr. Nathan Dean and the doctors and staff at the Salt Lake Clinic and IHC Home Health and also the many friends and neighbors who have loved and cared for her.
There will be a private family service with viewing at noon and services at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
