A 35-year-old former Davis County corrections officer received the maximum sentence - three years to life in prison - for molesting a girl under the age of 14 over a period of more than two years.

Don Schofield said in court Monday he was sorry for the pain and suffering he had caused his family and the victim.Schofield's attorney, Kenneth Brown, asked the court for leniency, pointing out that Schofield had been seeking treatment for his disorder and only continued therapy would help him.

Police said Schofield's family, after discovering the abuse, turned him in to authorities.

At the time, Schofield was working as a corrections officer at the Davis County Jail. Jail officials said Schofield was immediately fired.

Schofield's family and his attorney all expected him to be placed on probation and ordered to receive counseling. But 2nd District Judge Darwin Hansen gave the Syracuse resident the maximum sentence.
