Quarter-by-Quarter

1st Quarter: Greg Foster sets the tone for the Jazz early. He slams back a missed John Stockton shot for the first two points of the game and then hits a 15-footer to give Utah a 4-0 lead. The Lakers could not make a shot. Los Angeles was only 1-of-12 from the field during the first nine minutes of the game as the Jazz opened up an 11-point lead. The Jazz, led by Karl Malone's six points, led 24-13 at the break after shooting 57.9 percent from the field. The Lakers were only 4-for-21 shooting (19 percent). Shaquille O'Neal was shut out in the period. The home crowd was loving it.

2nd quarter: Howard Eisley and Chris Morris come out huge early in the period as the Jazz continue to pad their lead. The duo scores all 18 points during an 18-3 run to open the period, as the Jazz go up 42-16. Morris finishes the half with 10 points while Eisley has a team-high 14 on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. The Jazz get a scare with 3:57 to play when Malone fell near mid-court with what looked like a left knee injury. He was on the ground for a minute or so but left on his own power and didn't even miss any game action after a timeout. The Jazz go up by as many as 30 points before settling for a 26-point halftime lead, 61-35.

3rd quarter: The Jazz don't let up. The Lakers come out with O'Neal on Malone and the Jazz take advantage right away. Malone scores 16 points in the quarter, while dishing out three assists. O'Neal nets nine points in the period as the Lakers pull to within 19 at one point, but the Jazz have the lead back up to 26 by the end of the period. After a Foster slam dunk with 4:28 to play he ran in front of the Lakers bench just as he had six weeks earlier in a similar situation. But this time, instead of running his finger across his throat in a slashing motion, he held his index finger to his mouth as if to say "I'll be quiet."

4th quarter: The Lakers shrivel up and die, losing by a franchise-record 35 points. They went 2-for-21 (9.5 percent) from the field to seal their fate. Los Angeles scores a grand total of 12 points in the period. Jazz starters John Stockton, Bryon Russell and Jeff Hornacek get the entire quarter off for good behavior. Malone plays only two minutes as the benches are cleared. Antoine Carr does the most damage, hitting four straight jumpers to open the period for eight points. Seldom-used Jazz rookie Jacque Vaughn even gets into the act with a bucket and a rebound during the game's final four minutes.

Quotable

"I'm going to start flaring my elbows. If a couple of Hall of Famers, get caught, they get caught under my elbows. If they are going to let people throw 'bows, then we are all going to throw 'bows."
