A head-on collision about 25 miles northeast of St. George injured eight people Wednesday night, three critically.

The accident occurred one mile south of Toquerville, Washington County, on U-17 about 7:15 p.m.Jerami Banks, 18, St. George, was driving southbound on U-17 when he tried to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone, according to a Utah Highway Patrol report.

Another vehicle, driven by Kim Pope, 33, Toquerville, was northbound on the two-lane road at the same time. Pope's car swerved off the east side of the road to avoid hitting Banks' car, the report said.

The two vehicles met head-on when Banks' car also swerved to the east side of the road.

Banks and passenger Mason Dofelmire, 18, St. George, were taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center, where they were in critical condition Friday morning. Another passenger, Kandi Ingram, 14, St. George, was taken by helicopter to LDS Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Friday morning.

Pope was also taken by helicopter to LDS Hospital, where she was listed in satisfactory condition Friday. Her passengers, Morgan Pope, 13, Lauren Pope, 10, BreAnne Pope, 5, and Madeson Pope, 19 months, were taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center with less-serious injuries.

BreAnne Pope was later transferred by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center, where she was in fair condition Friday morning.
