Churches and related organizations around the world have warned that nuclear tests carried out by the Indian government this week pose a major threat to peace in Asia.

Officials with the Methodist Church in Great Britain, Catholic Bishops' Conferences of India, England and Wales, the Lutheran World Federation, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the Council of Churches for Britain and England and the Church of England all condemned the testing, and many derided nations that continue to stockpile nuclear weapons.Positions taken over the past 50 years by the World Council of Churches call for the total abolition of nuclear weapons.
