Assisted suicide crusader Dr. Jack Kevorkian was charged with assault and resisting arrest after a scuffle with police at a hospital where he was bringing a body, authorities said Friday.

Kevorkian and an associate, Dr. Georges Reding, were in custody on $200 bonds after the late Thursday incident, said police in this Detroit suburb.Police said two officers were at the ambulance entrance to William Beaumont Hospital on a separate matter when one recognized Kevorkian arriving with Reding in a car and thought they might be dropping off a body.

Police said the body dropped off at the hospital was that of a 26-year-old man from Aptos, Calif. The man was pronounced dead by a doctor at the hospital.
