Tennis legend Billie Jean King is the winner of this year's Elizabeth Blackwell award, an honor for women championing equality of the sexes that was named for the first American woman to earn a medical degree.
King, 54, will receive the award at a ceremony at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York state on May 15. Blackwell received her doctor of medicine degree in 1849 from Geneva Medical College, later renamed Hobart College.King became a nationally ranked tennis star in 1960. She won 20 Wimbledon titles, including six singles championships. And she helped found the Women's Tennis Association and the Women's Sports Foundation, an advocacy organization for female athletes.
