Utahns are asked to donate nonperishable food items and leave them by their mailbox for pick up Saturday, May 9.

That's the day the National Association of Letter Carriers will participate in a collection of food items to be distributed to food banks and emergency food pantries. Some 1,700 letter carriers in Utah will pick up food that day. Last year, Utah carriers collected more than 460,000 pounds of food, said Joe Reading, Springville, a letter carrier at the Orem Post Office and state coordinator of the project.

High-protein food such as tuna fish and peanut butter are among items particularly sought.
