Forget the bare-bones acoustic guitar. James Taylor was backed by strings galore when he sang his new song, "Boston to Belfast," at Symphony Hall.

Taylor headlined the Boston Pops' opening night Wednesday. Earlier, he and conductor Keith Lockhart fine-tuned arrangements of favorites like "Fire and Rain."Lockhart said he was thrilled to work again with the man who wrote "the soundtrack of our lives." The two performed together at the opening of the Fleet-Center in 1995.
