City Recorder J. Douglas Bird was fired by Mayor Hal Wing last week, and other city staffers are picking up the slack until a replacement is found.

"There's no skullduggery involved," Wing said. "We just decided to go our separate ways."When contacted at his home, Bird declined to comment. He served as the city's recorder, with responsibilities for taking minutes at meetings and overseeing preparation of the annual budget, for about six years.

Wing said that he made the decision last week with unanimous support from the City Council. State law allows him prerogative to remove an appointed official, said Wing, who was elected in November and took office at the beginning of the year.

Jo Evans has been named interim city recorder and Cameron Gunther has been hired to help prepare the city's budget, which must be adopted by May 19. Wing said the city will publish a job description and begin the search for Bird's replacement immediately.
