A man competing with a friend to see who could stand the longest in front of an oncoming train was seriously injured when it struck him, tossing him nearly 70 feet.

David Flannery Jr., 22, was hit by the CSX train Sunday night, sheriff's deputy Tony Lynch said. The other man jumped out of the way just in time. The speed limit for trains in the area is 40 mph "and the train would have been going well below that at the time of the accident," said CSX spokeswoman Cathy Burns in Jacksonville, Fla.
