Police don't have many leads in a stabbing that left two men seriously injured early Saturday.

David C. Medina, 44, and Michael W. Gray, 45, apparently were attacked outside the Days Inn, 315 W. 3300 South, shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, said Salt Lake County deputy Peggy Faulkner.Deputies were dispatched to the scene and found a small pool of blood but no victims, said Sheriff's Lt. Steve Stout.

"When you find blood but no victims, there's not a whole lot you can do," he said. "We knocked on some doors at the motel but didn't find anything."

Apparently, the men called police but then left their room, Faulkner said. At about 3:15 a.m., one of the victims called dispatchers again for help.

This time, deputies found the men in a room with stab wounds. Both were "heavily" intoxicated, Stout said.

Medina was taken by helicopter to LDS Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition Monday morning. Gray was taken by ambulance to St. Mark's Hospital and later transferred to University Hospital where he was also listed in serious condition.

The men were not able to provide much information to investigators Saturday, and it is unknown what precipitated the stabbing.

Detectives from the sheriff's department are investigating the case as an attempted homicide, Stout said. Deputies haven't made any arrests.
