Quarter-by-quarter

st quarter: The Jazz are obviously ready. They waste no time asserting themselves, running out to a 15-4 lead behind two baskets each from Karl Malone and Greg Foster and a trey from Jeff Hornacek. Clyde Drexler takes eight shots in the period but hits only one. He goes 0-for-3 from the 3-point line. Seldom-used backup Othella Harrington, replacing injured Charles Barkley as Houston's sixth man, is the only Rocket to shoot better than 50 percent (2-of-3 shooting) in only three minutes of action. Houston combines for a miserable 33 percent from the field. Malone finishes the period with 8 points; Hornacek tallies 9 as the Jazz shoot 50 percent and take a 21-14 lead.

nd quarter: The teams trade baskets early until Jazz-killer Eddie Johnson enters the game at the 9:30 mark. Johnson scores 6 in the period but only gets off one 3-pointer - and misses it. Howard Eisley and Malone keep the Jazz out in front with 6 and 8 points, respectively. The previously hot Hornacek plays only three minutes and doesn't even take a shot. Drexler remains cold, taking no shots and hitting only 3 of 6 from the free-throw line. This time it's the Rockets' turn to shoot 50 percent (to Jazz's 38.9) as Houston outscores Utah 19-18 in the period, but the Jazz maintain a 39-33 haltime lead.

rd quarter: Mario Elie scores the first basket of the quarter, but the Jazz follow it up with a 8-0 mini-run powered by two buckets from the Mailman. The Rockets' Kevin Willis hits a layup, only to be followed by a jumper from Malone at the top of the key, prompting the Mailman to play to the crowd, seemingly telling the Rockets to bring it on. Well, the Rockets take exception and roll off 11 straight points during which John Stockton is knocked to the floor by Drexler, drawing outrage from the crowd; no foul is called. Houston gets as close as 53-52 before Malone puts the Jazz back in command, scoring six points in another 8-0 Jazz run. Harrington's tip-in closes the quarter with Utah up 61-54.

th quarter: The Jazz maintain their single-digit lead through the first five minutes of the quarter, weathering a 6-point surge from the Rockets with a 3-pointer from Russell. Greg Ostertag finally awakens and leads a key defensive sequence for the Jazz, turning back three consecutive Rocket shots (two from Hakeem Olajuwon). A Shandon Anderson steal and another Ostertag block help the Jazz shut down the Rockets for good. Neither team shoots well from the field or free-throw line during the period, the Jazz making only 33 percent in each category. Ostertag hits 2 of 6 free throws, including an airball miss, but at that point, the Jazz are comfortably in front 78-66. A pretty ballet-like layin from Malone with 1:27 left cements the victory for Utah. Ostertag tallies five blocks in the period, a Jazz playoff record.
