The Air Force successfully launched an unarmed Minuteman 3 missile Friday in a test of its ability to deliver multiple nuclear warheads to distant targets, officials said.

The intercontinental ballistic missile was launched at 6:28 a.m., aimed at Kwajalein Atoll near the Marshall Islands in the western Pacific Ocean, said Airman 1st Class Ann-Marie Townsend.

"The purpose of the launch is to test and evaluate how well the missile operates," said Master Sgt. Bruce Zielsdorf.
