The astronomers who found two small moons orbiting Uranus last year have decided to name them Caliban and Sycorax, after characters mentioned in Shakespeare's play "The Tempest."

Three of the planet's other moons also have Shakespearean names. They are named for Ariel, the sprite in "The Tempest," King Lear's daughter Cordelia and Hamlet's sister Ophelia.Cornell University said in a statement Friday that university astronomer Philip Nicholson and his colleagues had proposed the names and that the International Astronomical Union was likely to approve them.

The moons, which are 37 miles and 75 miles in diameter respectively, initially bore the scientific names S/1997 U1 and S/1997 U2.
