James Lee Burke's "Cimarron Rose," a thriller set in the town of Deaf Smith, Texas, won the Edgar Award as the best mystery book of 1997.

The award was presented Thursday by the Mystery Writers of America. The Edgars are named for Edgar Allan Poe.Joseph Kanon's "Los Alamos" won the Edgar for best first mystery by an American, while "L.A. Confidential" received the Edgar for best mystery movie.

The husband-and-wife team Richard Firstman and Jamie Talan won in the true crime competition for the book "The Death of Innocents."
