WOMEN'S TENNIS: Even with a loss at the No. 1 singles position, the top-seeded and eighth-ranked BYU women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of this year's WAC Championships on Thursday.
BYU easily defeated ninth seeded Tulsa 5-1. The Cougars' lone loss came from freshman Holly Parkinson, who lost a tough match to Tulsa's Anousika Van Exal, 6-4, 6-1.
Eline Chiew, Adrien Jenkins, Jodi Richardson, Tara Reid and Brooke Leavens all grabbed straight-set wins for the Cougars. No doubles matches were played.
In Friday's semifinal round, BYU, 19-2, was to play the winner of the match between Fresno State and TCU.
The conference championships finish on Saturday with the title match set for 1 p.m. on the TCU campus.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: BYU's Ryan Millar and Ossie Antonetti have been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America team, with Millar a repeat honoree on the first team.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach Trent Shippen has signed three players for next year, including two junior college transfers from Ricks College.
Cady Williams and Mari Burningham both played for Ricks, while Jennifer Leitner is a 6-1 forward from from Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, Calif. The 6-4 Burningham attended UCLA before injuring her back and transferring to Ricks.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Utes have signed Katherine McColl, a 6-foot power forward from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. McColl averaged 21.8 points and 10.3 rebounds last season for Westdale Secondary School, where she was a first-team all-star.
SOFTBALL: Sophomore Sandy Millard won two extra-inning games for the Aggies with a two-run homer in game one and an RBI single in game two to run the Utah State winning streak to four games.
Millard blasted her third long ball of the season in game one off New Mexico State in the bottom of the eighth which followed a two-out, two-RBI double by junior Tammy Alcantar in the seventh. Alcantar and Millard accounted for four of USU's eight hits and four of the five RBI.
Senior pitcher Tara Thompson notched the complete game victory, pitching eight innings and allowing only five hits and one earned run. Thompson got the win despite six errors by the Aggie defense.
Utah State will honor their seniors on Saturday in a doubleheader with the Big West Conference-leading Matadors of Cal State Northridge. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. MST.
TRACK AND FIELD: Weber State's men's and women's outdoor track and field teams, are set to compete in the University of Oregon Invitational, Saturday in Eugene, Oregon. The Wildcats are coming off a 118-81 win over Utah State in last Monday's dual meet in Logan.
