After last year's disappointing turnout, the Godfather of Soul is canning his annual birthday blowout in hopes of organizing an all-star, televised tribute.

James Brown had held a birthday concert in his adopted hometown of Augusta, Ga., since 1994. But last year, the auditorium where the event was held was half empty. Tickets sold for up to $25 each."A man's never a legend in his hometown," said Brown's attorney, Buddy Dallas.

It cost Brown up to $100,000 a year to hold the Augusta concerts, Dallas said. So he canceled the May 7 event and also dropped plans for a big celebration in Las Vegas on Sunday. The singer is in negotiations for a televised tribute.
