Mr. Kirkwood, age 93, of North Palm Beach, Florida, passed away at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, Palm Beach Gardens, FL on Monday, April 27, 1998.

He was born in Provo, Utah on November 19, 1904, son of the late Thomas Matthew Kirkwood and Sarah Jane Whitehead Kirkwood. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Virginia B. Kirkwood, who died in 1987.Mr. Kirkwood began his career as a stock boy with the F.W. Woolworth Company in Salt Lake City, and he progressed through the company ranks to become Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He was Honorary Director of the company from his retirement in 1969 until his death. He resided in various cities throughout the USA during his 54 1/2 year career with Woolworth's.

Mr. Kirkwood received honorary doctorate from Simpson College, Des Moines, IA and Suffolk University, Boston, MA. He was a lecturer and advisor at the School of Business of Brigham Young University; he was a member of the Tobe Lecture Series at Harvard University as well as a lecturer in business subjects at other universities around the country.

He was a member of the Rotary Club in Sheridan, WY, Bismark, ND and Grand Forks, ND and a member of the Elks Lodge of Mitchell, SD, Bismark, ND, and a member of the Free & Accepted Masons. He was former Director of Lost Tree Club, former Trustee of Lost Tree Chapel, and former Director of Ecclestone Development, Inc., North Palm Beach, FL. Mr Kirkwood was Director of Irving Trust Company, New York City for 18 1/2 years, Director of the Charter of New York, a bank holding company, and Director of Greenwich Country Club, Greenwich, CT for 10 years. A major shopping center in Bismark, ND, Kirkwood Shopping Center, was named after Mr. Kirkwood because of his extensive involvement in civic activities.

Mr. Kirkwood is survived by two children, Robert C. Kirkwood, Jr., of Hollywood, FL; and Mary Kirkwood Van Loan, of East Dennis, MA; five grandchildren, Robert C. Kirkwood III, of Jupiter, FL; Richard Van Loan, of Boston, MA; Kimberly Kirkwood, of Dallas, TX; Lynn Van Loan Brainerd, of Stony Creek, CT; Robert Van Loan, of Stamford, CT; two great-grandchildren: Robert Campbell Kirkwood IV, and Cameron Marr Kirkwood; four sisters, Phylis Copper, of Provo; Mildred Snyder, of Keensburg, CO; Ann Graehl, of El Cajon, CA; Dorothy Beers, of Provo; and one brother, Jack W. Kirkwood, of Missoula, MT.

Memorial service will be held at Lost Tree Chapel, 11149 Turtle Beach Road, North Palm Beach, on Friday, May 1, 1998, at 2 p.m. with Dr. Herman J. Ridder, Pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Kirkwood may be made to Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. Arrangements by WM. N. Howard Funeral Home, North Palm Beach.
