MARTINEZ MIGHT HAVE ULCER: Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez, bothered by a stomach problem that might be an ulcer, plans to make his 124th straight start Tuesday night, pitching against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox flew Martinez from Detroit to Boston on Thursday for tests.A tube was inserted down his throat and into his stomach. He said the original diagnosis was gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach, and he was told it might have been caused by bacteria.

A biopsy was performed, but the result was not known.

Martinez is drinking milk and milkshakes, and can eat salads and solids, but not fried foods.

Martinez, acquired from Montreal in the offseason, is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in five starts for the Red Sox.
