The Maui Ocean Center, an aquarium and five-acre marine park, opened on March 13, recreating underwater environments of the Hawaiian islands. Visitors can learn how Hawaii's volcanic formations, deep-water channels and isolation from other land masses have combined to create a distinctive reef environment.

In the Underwater Journey, an acrylic tunnel allows visitors to walk through a 750,000-gallon saltwater tank containing mahi-mahi, tiger sharks and tuna. In the Whale Discovery Center, life-size models, interactive displays and photos tell the story of the humpback whale's annual migration. Children can feel sea stars, urchins and other creatures at an outdoor touch pool. The Maui Ocean Center, 192 Maalaea Road, overlooking Maalaea Harbor on the island of Maui, is open daily.
