Our cherished wife, mother and grandmother returned home on April 23, 1998.

Ruth B. McPhie was born on May 3, 1923, into the loving home of Carl W. and Lucile T. Buehner. Ruth married her childhood sweetheart, Joseph Marshall McPhie, on July 5, 1945, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She saw beauty in everything and everyone. She gained a great love of the arts during her college days at the U of U, where she graduated with a BA in Speech and Drama. She used her talents in music, speech, drama, and dancing to inspire and influence the youth for many years. She also showed a wonderful creativity as she prepared unique roadshows, challenging wilderness camps, and dazzling dance festivals. Her "Gold and Green Balls" were legendary. She was a devoted member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.

Ruth served four times as Mission President's Companion. She loved to "mother" her missionaries in the Virginia Roanoke, Australia Sydney, Temple Square, and Scotland Edinburgh Missions. Missionaries were inspired by her beautiful testimony and lifted by her warm smile. She's been joyfully active in the church throughout her life. In addition to her love for the youth, she had tender feelings for the children in Primary. Many of the people she met in Relief Society remain her dearest friends. Among her choicest friendships were those of the "Dayton Group".

She was a radiant spirit with a soul-deep love of the Lord. Her pure childlike faith and tender sweet care helped to create an exceptionally close-knit "clan". Her family was the center of her life, and to her children, she was the heart of their home. Her happy outlook on life showed. Her children called her "cheery eyes." After spending time with her, you felt as if you'd had a good hug. She had a great sense of humor and would often say what a "moving" experience it was to be married to an Air Force Colonel (40 moves in 53 years). Most of all, Joe adored his bride.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph M. McPhie, and sons: Michael P., Provo; J. Craig (Marilyn), San Diego; and daughters: Patty McPhie, San Diego; Kathy Crabb, West Jordan; Becky (Clark) Reeder, Salt Lake City; and

Debbie (Tim) Brown, Murray; 21 grandchildren; brother Carl T. (Joyce) Buehner, sister Marilyn (John) Riches, sister-in-law Nancy Ferrin, and "adopted" sisters Jayne and Phyllis. She was preceded in death by her sister June and June's husband Jack Ferrin, and her son-in-law, Rusty Crabb.

Funeral services will be Thursday, 12 noon,

Holladay 28th Ward Chapel at 2625 E. Milo Way (4910 S.), about 3 blocks south of Holladay city center. Friends may call Wednesday 6-8:30 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and Thursday 11-11:45 a.m., at the church.
