Our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 25, 1998.
Born September 5, 1899 in Danville, PA, the only child of Genevieve Atwood and Ferdinand Quentin Hartman. Married Sara Emily Darrell of Stonington, CT and New York City. One daughter, Amanda Atwood Lindberg of Stonington, CT. Married Margaret Fisher in 1944, widowed 1970. Four sons, Conant Atwood of Princeton, NJ; Hardin Atwood, deceased; Dr. John Edwin Atwood of Stanford, CA; and Frank Fisher (Maurene Supple) Atwood of Indian Head, MD; and one daughter, Margaret Genevieve (Don Mabey) Atwood of Salt Lake. Married Beth Olson Gremillion in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 30, 1976. Three step-sons, Dr. F. James (Sandra) Gremillion of Colorado Springs, CO; David M. (Carolyn) Gremillion of Roy, UT; and Dr. Richard B. (Pam) Gremillion of Palo Alto, CA. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy.Educated at the Hill School and Harvard College, he joined the Atwood Machine Company, Stonington, CT in 1926 as a factory hand and eventually became Vice President. Served in World War II. Moved permanently to Salt Lake City in 1946. Self employed for 45 years. Active in civic and educational organizations including the Harvard Club of Utah and Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School. He was a member of the Timpanogas Club and Alta Club. His conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1975 brought years of happiness and great satisfaction. He will always be remembered as a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Thanks are extended by the family to Dr. Thomas H. Caine and to Dr. Lloyd Wayland Macfarlane (deceased) for their contribution to his extraordinarily full and healthy life. Also our deepest appreciation and thanks to St. Joseph's Villa in Salt Lake City, where he spent his last month in their professional, compassionate care.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at 12 noon, in the 27th East Ward Chapel, 1300 East Fairfax Road (5th Avenue and Virginia Street), Salt Lake City. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the Ward on Wednesday 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City.
