It was quite an afternoon for Kearns High's Kelly Snodgrass at the 41st annual Davis High Invitational Track and Field meet Saturday.
She took home four first-place medals - and the meet female Outstanding Athlete award - for her dominance on the Kaysville track. Her efforts in winning the 400 meters and as a member of winning relay teams in the 4x800, 4x100 and 4x400 were nothing short of sensational. She narrowly eclipsed the performances of two other fine female athletes during the state's next-to-last qualifying meet prior to finals in three weeks. Mountain View's Lindsey Steele, a sophomore, broke the state 5A girls' high jump record with a leap of 5-10, breaking the previous record of 5-8 she tied just last weekend at the Weber State Invitational. Viewmont's Danna Rast, who will compete for BYU next year, continued her domination in the sprints, winning both the 100 and 200 meters with ease.
Bountiful's Ryan Smith set a meet record with a throw of 210-11 in the javelin, the best effort in the state this year. He earned outstanding performance for the boys, while Daymon Visser of Emery and Layton's Sylvester Daniels were named co-male outstanding athletes.
Visser won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, while Daniels placed second in the 100 meters behind Dixie's Cody Fonnesbeck and came back to upset Fonnesbeck in the 200 meters. He also anchored Layton's winning 400 relay team.
