Salt Lake City will become the talk of the nation May 14 and 15 when National Public Radio broadcasts its "Talk of the Nation" and "Science Friday" programs from Westminster College.

The programs, to air on KCPW (FM-88.3 and FM-105.1), will be broadcast before live audiences for the first time ever in Utah."Talk of the Nation" will air live from noon to 2 p.m. on the 14th. It will be repeated at 7 p.m.

"Science Friday" will be broadcast the next day from noon to 2 p.m. live and will air again from 7-9 p.m.

"Talk of the Nation" is hosted by Ray Suarez, and Ira Flatow is the anchor of "Science Friday."

Tickets for these live broadcasts are already sold out.

Topics to be discussed include Utah's growing role in genetics research, the impact of growth in the West, the Great Salt Lake wetlands and Utah's economic boom.

Both shows will air from the Jewett Center for Performing Arts.

- KFNZ (alias "K-Fan," AM-1320) - David James of KUTV has taken over for Kevin Graham on the morning sports show (7-10 a.m.) with Gordon Monson and Ron Boone. He start-ed April 17.

Graham has moved on to Columbus, Ohio, as the program director the flagship Buckeyes station.

- KCPW (FM-88.3) will air "Legalizing Marijuana," an address by Dennis Peron, candidate for California governor, Wednesday, April 29, 11 a.m.

"Is the Party Over?" is an address by Rob Bishop, chairman of the Utah Republican Party, and Meghan Holbrook, chairman of the Utah Democratic Party, to be broadcast Thursday, April 30, 11 a.m.

- TEN YEARS AGO - KBER has announced a contest that features a $75,000 house as its grand prize. The KBER morning team is Street Stryder and Katherine Brown.

- RADIO HAPPENINGS - Jon Carter on KRSP had a new installment of "Mister Twister" Tuesday. Mr. Outdoors went on a rare spring turkey hunt. Carter also airs a popular rock 'n' roll synonym quiz contest . . . "Tom, Rick and Dawn" on KKAT Tuesday let a listener ask Dan Pope of KTVX a weather question on the air. The DJs are still giving away $102 in a cash contest . . .

"Bob and Tom" (syndicated show) on KBER Tuesday were speculating about life in stations on the moon . . . "Mick, Allen and Roxy" on KURR are looking for a secretary of the year. The DJs also gave away a laptop computer this week . . . "Johnson and Johnson" on KUBL had selected listeners to use a slingshot Friday to shoot at a hoop on a 20-foot perch for a chance at winning Jazz playoff tickets."Fisher, Todd and Erin" on KISN-FM Tuesday listened to tales of "Men Gone Mad."
