Barbara Ford, president of the American Library Association, will be keynote speaker at the Utah Library Association and Mountain Plains Library Association conference May 6-9 at the Salt Palace.

She will speak at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 7, on "Global Reach, Local Touch," a theme of her presidency.Other conference speakers include G. Donald Gale, vice president for news and public affairs at Bonneville International Corp. and former KSL editorial director and Utah poet laureate David Lee. Gale will address a Thursday noon luncheon. Lee will speak Friday at noon.

Saturday sessions will feature a number of children's literature specialists including children's authors Peggy Rathmann and Mike Tunnel. Rathmann wrote the Caldecott-winning "Officer Buckle and Gloria," "Goodnight Gorilla" and "Ruby the Copycat." Tunnel, a local author, recently published "Mailing May."

Also scheduled Saturday are American Indian storytelling and previews of the Children's Literature Association of Utah award nominees for the 1998-1999 school year.
