The Daily Universe, Brigham Young University's student newspaper, has been named a medalist in the first round of a prestigious college journalism competition.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association, affiliated with Columbia University in New York, named the Daily Universe a medalist in its annual contest and critique. The medalist category includes all publications that score 925 points or more out of 1,000 possible.It is the highest award given in the first round of competition. The Universe's entry will now advance to the second round.

This is the first year the newspaper has entered the contest.

M. Dallas Burnett, associate dean of the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications, said the Columbia program is the largest, most complete and most prestigious college journalism competition in the country. Individual contests drew nearly 15,000 entries last year, and hundreds of publications were evaluated.

Fifteen issues of The Daily Universe from fall semester were submitted in this year's contest. They were evaluated according to 154 criteria in three broad areas: content, presentation and general operations.
