City officials are talking with a private prison company about possibly building a prison here.
Management Training Corp. of Ogden considered building a prison in nearby Payson in January but withdrew the proposal when residents objected, despite the promise of more jobs and better economic conditions."We referred them to Santaquin," said Payson city administrator Keith Morey.
Santaquin City Councilman Lynn Adams said city officials recently toured the company's minimum security facility near the Utah State Prison. If a facility is built in Santaquin, the prison would house between 400 and 500 medium-security inmates, he said.
Also, a prison in Santaquin wouldn't be far from the site that company officials looked at in Payson. Borders separating the two cities are as close as one to two miles.
Adams said Santaquin is only one of several locations that Management and Training Corp. officials are considering.
