A West Salt Lake woman and a Cottonwood Heights man have been charged with dumping the body of a dead man in a ditch after he died of drug poisoning in January.
According to 3rd District Court charges filed Friday, Robert Ramos, 46, was "partying" at an apartment Jan. 11 when he went to the bathroom. About 15 minutes later, the man and the woman went to check on him and noticed he had passed out on the bathroom floor. They "checked his pulse and found that he was dead," the charges state. "In the bathroom were a syringe and some leftover tar heroin."
The woman was concerned about the "inconvenience this situation would cause her in her upcoming child custody hearing," and the body was left in the house for three days, the charges state. Then the woman obtained some large plastic sheets from a lumberyard and, along with the man, wrapped the body, carried it to the trunk of a car, and took it to a dump site where they threw it into a ditch.
On Jan. 18, a bicyclist looking for aluminum cans ran into Ramos' body at 7560 W. 2100 South.
An autopsy by the medical examiner's office revealed Ramos died as a result of mixed drug poisoning, including heroin, ethanol and cocaine.
The man, 38, and the woman, 26, have been charged with abuse or desecration of a dead human body, a third-degree felony. A $5,000 arrest warrant has been issued for each.
